Contact: Tony CipollaPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 6-30-17, Approximately 12:30 PMPlace of Occurrence: Jacaranda Lane area, Los OsosVictim Information: Daniel Alan Arndt, 69, Los OsosSuspect Information: N/AOn 6-30-17, members of the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit were able to locate an at-risk missing man alive in the steep, rugged terrain of the Jacaranda Lane area of Los Osos. They had been searching for 69-year-old Daniel Alan Arndt since last night.
Arndt was last seen walking away from his home in the 2900 block of Clark Valley Road in Los Osos at approximately 2:00 PM on 6-29-17. The Sheriff's Office received a missing persons report on Arndt at approximately 9:10 PM. Deputies and Detectives immediately began searching for him and were joined by the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit a short time later. Arndt was considered at-risk because he has dementia and takes medication for a medical issue. He did not take his medication or his cell phone with him.
Searchers looked for Arndt all through the night and into this morning. Members of the Sheriff's Posse also joined in the search for Arndt.
At approximately 12:30 PM, crews who had been searching on a steep hillside, were calling out to Arndt, when they heard him respond. They made visual contact with Arndt a short time later in a steep ravine. Arndt was alive but his vital signs were weak. Arndt was given some fluids and began to respond positively.
Because the area was so steep and filled with poison oak, a CHP helicopter was brought in to airlift Arndt to safety. An ambulance was standing by and Arndt was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.
Sheriff Parkinson wishes to thank all those who helped in the search, but especially the volunteers with the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit, for today's positive outcome.
