Concealed Carry Weapon License

CCW License General Information

The applicant is not a disqualified person to receive such a license as determined in accordance with the standards set forth in Penal Code section 26202.

The applicant is at least 21 years of age and presents clear evidence of their identity and age as defined in Penal Code section 16400.

The applicant is a resident of San Luis Obispo County. Prima Facie evidence of residency within the county includes, but is not limited to, the address where the applicant is registered to vote, the applicant’s filing of a homeowner’s property tax exemption, or other documents that would indicate current residency. Any document uploaded must be current.

The applicant has successfully completed a course of training as described in Penal Code section 26165.

The applicant is the recorded owner of the weapon with the State of California.

A standard CCW license is valid for two (2) years from the date of issuance. CCW licenses can be revoked at any time by the Sheriff’s Office for cause.

A New/Initial application costs $209.00* (includes $93.00 Live Scan fee and $116.00 Sheriff’s Office fee). The initial fee of $131.00 is to be paid at the time the application is submitted. The remaining balance of $78.00 is due upon the approval of the application.

A Renewal application costs $77.00* (includes $52.00 Live Scan fee and $25.00 Sheriff’s Office fee) and is paid in full when the application is submitted.

A Modification to an existing CCW license costs $10.00* and is due when the application is submitted.

A Duplicate CCW license costs $10.00* and requires a letter of explanation for the duplicate request.

No. Any weapon listed on the CCW license must be registered to you. This is a change in the law as of January 1, 2024. The weapon also cannot be registered as a “single shot”.

One of the requirements of maintaining a CCW license is to notify the Sheriff’s Office if you have contact with law enforcement (other than a traffic stop and minor citation). Once notified, we will review the facts and make a determination. Your CCW license could be suspended or revoked depending on the circumstances.

CCW License Applications

The application is available online at CCW Application. Read all information thoroughly, then select the option on the left side of the page for the application type that applies to you and complete the entire application.

To log in, you will need the order number that is on your application, the email address that you specified in the application, and your password. For credit card payments made online, a nominal credit card transaction fee will be charged for each transaction. Charges will be viewable prior to transaction completion.

Prior to starting the online application for a New/Initial CCW license application, you will need to scan the following documents and have them available for uploading to the application:

  •  · A copy of your valid California driver’s license or state issued photo ID, that has your current address in San Luis Obispo County and that matches your CCW application.
  •  · At least one Proof of Residency document showing your current address in San Luis Obispo County. Examples of Proof of Residency documents that may be used include a lease/rental agreement, utility bill, tax bill, or current voter registration card.

If you follow the instructions, it should take you less than 30 minutes to complete the application. You are allowed 90 minutes before your session will close and your entries are lost.

Once your application has been submitted, we will start the background investigation. You may be contacted by phone or email for clarification or additional documents that are needed. If we have everything we need, you will be advised to take the training as required by law. Once that is completed, you will come into the office for an interview at the date and time that you chose when submitting the application. The interview, fingerprinting, and taking of a photograph will take approximately 30 minutes.

Once the interview is complete, we must wait for DOJ approval. This may take up to several months. Once we get DOJ approval, the application is reviewed one more time and forwarded to a Chief Deputy for their review and approval.

Yes. If your CCW license application is denied, you may submit the California Department of Justice form BOF 1031 to the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court.

CCW License Modifications

A name change is required within 10 days of the change. To process this, please visit the CCW Application page and select the MODIFY on the left side of the screen.

Note: You will need to scan the official name change document (e.g., marriage license) prior to starting the modification application.

An address change is required within 10 days of your move. To process this, please visit the CCW Application page and select the MODIFY on the left side of the screen.

Note: You will need to scan and upload a current Proof of Residency that shows your name, current address, and current date. You will also need to upload a valid ID (e.g., driver’s license) that reflects your current address.

To add a weapon to an existing CCW license, please visit the CCW Application page and select the MODIFY on the left side of the screen.

Note: If adding a weapon, you must first qualify with the weapon at one of the approved training sites and scan the Range Qualification form prior to starting the modification application. You will complete some personal information and upload the Range Qualification form. If you just recently obtained the weapon, upload the Dealers Record of Sale or Transfer form.

Note: We will accept the renewal training course as long as you provide proof of your current CCW license with the agency that you are leaving, and the renewal course is completed through one of our approved training providers.

One your CCW license has expired, you will not be able to legally carry a concealed weapon.

If your license has expired, you will be considered a renewal for up to one year from the date of expiration.
