The center replaces two outdated and overcrowded dispatch facilities, enhancing emergency response coordination and collaboration across the region.

“This new center represents a significant step forward in how our agencies work together to serve the community,” said Sheriff Ian Parkinson. “It is a testament to the dedication of our dispatchers and public safety personnel, and the importance of strong teamwork in keeping our county safe.”

The 20,193-square-foot, two-story facility features a 140-foot communications tower, advanced dispatch technology, and expanded capacity for future growth. Key statistics for the project include over 140 tons of steel, 150,000 feet of network cabling, more than 315,000 feet of electrical wiring, and 2,000 cubic yards of concrete. The site improvements include new paving, concrete walkways, and 75 parking stalls. The project, funded at $39,922,358, was developed through a Design-Build process managed by SLO County Public Works, with collaboration from IBI Group (Architect), Diani Building Corp. (Design-Builder), T & S Structural (Structural), Above Grade Engineering (Civil), 3C Engineering (MEP), Mid-Coast Geotechnical, Oasis Associates (Landscape), and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE/SLO County Fire, SLO County IT, OES, and Administration.

“This new communications center represents the next generation of public safety for San Luis Obispo County,” said Fire Chief John Owens. “By bringing our fire and law enforcement dispatchers together under one roof, we’re improving how quickly and effectively we can respond when our community needs us most.”

The center will serve as the central hub for 911 and emergency communications, providing enhanced management of major incidents such as wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and other emergencies. Its design improves operational efficiency while allowing for future expansion to meet the evolving needs of the community.

The facility’s ribbon-cutting ceremony took place today, marking the official opening and the beginning of operations from this modern, co-located center.
